All over social media there is a house divided on the subject of stretch marks.
One side of the house seems to have wide open windows full of proud mothers who see these “tiger stripes” as a rite of passage. They are proud and try to encourage other women to be proud too.
On the other side of the house are drawn curtains with mothers who are more modest and not yet comfortable in their new skin. They seem to view this as an almost devastating change to the bodies they once loved – if they ever actually did.
Now I’m not here to say one side is just or unjust, and, quite frankly, my stance is rather neutral in support of both sides. What I would like to do is give a shout out to all of the women (myself included) who have these marks on our body and have never experienced pregnancy or childbirth. Because of these other two very established camps, we are sort of left in a lurch; an awkward clique in the society of women.
We have bodies that take us through our day to day. We come in all shapes and sizes, and just like butterflies some of us go through our own individual metamorphosis. That could look like a lot of different things.
As for me, my body has many ebbs and flows. And it is not quite finished yet.
One thing though that will be with me to the end phase of my transformation is my “tiger stripes”. Even though I believe there will always be those two camps – the ones who want to keep them covered and those who are comfortable in their skin, I don’t want myself or others to feel any less worthy because these marks were not a part of childbirth.
I encourage you beautiful ladies to learn how to love and appreciate the body you have without being pigeon holed into yet another category. This is a lesson I have to keep reminding myself of on a daily basis.
Whether out in the open or under cotton layers, be proud. These stripes are a part of your body, and true beauty runs deeper than that.
